What Happens After a DVT Diagnosis, and When Should You See a Vascular Surgeon?

If you’ve just received a DVT diagnosis, treatment often starts right away to keep the clot from getting bigger or reaching your lungs. Anticoagulant medication works for many people, but where the clot is, your symptoms, and the risk of long-term vein damage can mean it’s a good idea to have a vascular specialist take a closer look.

What Happens Right After a DVT Diagnosis?

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot in a deep vein, most often in your leg. Your care team will look at where the clot is, how large it is, and your risk of bleeding. We’ll also work to determine what may have caused it, including things like surgery, prolonged immobility, illness, or certain medications.

Most deep vein thrombosis treatment begins with an anticoagulant, or blood thinner. These medications help stop the clot from growing while your body slowly breaks it down. Because blood thinners can raise your risk of bleeding, your doctor will want to keep a close eye on you during treatment.

When Should a Vascular Surgeon Review Your DVT?

Anticoagulation helps with many DVTs, but a vascular evaluation can show how the clot has affected your vein and whether you might need a different approach. At our New York City practice, we evaluate leg blood clots and DVT and provide recommendations based on where the clot is, your symptoms, and your overall health.

A vascular review may be especially useful when you have:

  • Severe or worsening leg pain and swelling
  • A clot that extends into the thigh or pelvis
  • Recurrent DVT or symptoms after a previous clot
  • Persistent heaviness, discoloration, or swelling
  • A need to discuss catheter-based clot treatment

When Might a DVT Procedure Be Considered?

Most people won’t need clot removal. If you have a recent, extensive DVT or severe symptoms, a vascular specialist may talk with you about catheter-directed thrombolysis or thrombectomy. These treatments use a small access point to deliver clot-dissolving medication or remove part of the clot.

Even if you need a procedure, you’ll usually still take anticoagulants as part of your treatment. The right plan depends on where the clot is, how severe your symptoms are, when the clot formed, your bleeding risk, and your overall health.

What Symptoms Need Emergency Care?

Call 911 or seek emergency care for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, or a rapid or irregular heartbeat. These may signal a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when part of a clot travels to the lungs. The CDC advises immediate medical attention for possible PE symptoms.

FAQ About Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment

Will a blood thinner make my DVT disappear immediately?

No. Anticoagulants help prevent the clot from growing and reduce the chance of new clots. Your body usually gradually breaks down the existing clot.

Why does my leg still swell after DVT treatment starts?

It can take a while for swelling to get better. If you keep having pain, heaviness, discoloration, or swelling, it could be a sign of post-thrombotic syndrome or another vein issue, so it’s important to get it checked out.

Dr. Benvenisty was excellent and helped us with my husband's extensive leg swelling related to diabetes. We had another specialist who didn't help us last year. We're planning to stay with Dr. Benvenisty now! He's detailed oriented, matter-of-fact and friendly. An excellent doctor I would strongly recommend.

Dr. Benvenisty treated my mother in the ER during this time of the covid outbreak. He was a part of a fantastic team of doctors that were brought in to find out what was ailing my mother. He is first and for most experienced in many areas as my mother was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Although he transferred the surgery to another member of his team, he gave me his mobile and kept me informed of her condition/diagnosis at a time where I was unable to be with her myself because of this pandemic. His heart, compassion, understanding and bedside manner are things that I will not ever forget. He is an excellent doctor and truly a great human being.
